Lift Like Lyss: Carrying the Weight Together

Take the challenge, share the story, and support Alyssa and her family as she fights cancer with strength and grace

What It Means to #LiftLikeLyss

Carrying the weight isn’t just a challenge—it’s a symbol of resilience, empathy, and the strength Alyssa shows every day. To “Lift Like Lyss” symbolizes carrying more than just physical weight—it represents the emotional, mental, and physical burdens that Alyssa faces daily with courage and determination. It’s about resilience in the face of overwhelming challenges, finding strength in adversity, and drawing inspiration from Alyssa’s relentless fight against cancer and her unwavering love for her family.

To lift like Lyss is also a call to action: it’s about stepping into someone else’s shoes, empathizing with their struggles, and choosing to shoulder a small part of their burden—both literally, through the challenge, and figuratively, by offering support, kindness, and solidarity. It embodies community, compassion, and the reminder that none of us have to carry life’s heaviest loads alone.

Our Story, Our Fight, Our Family

Our Story

Our life changed in ways we never could have imagined. My name is Thomas, and my wife, Alyssa, is the strongest person I know. Over the past 18 months, we’ve faced one unimaginable challenge after another, but through it all, we’ve clung to faith, hope, and each other.

It started with a severe postpartum uterine infection that nearly took Alyssa’s life. She went into septic shock, her heart faltered, and she spent weeks fighting for her life in the ICU. Miraculously, she survived, but the ordeal left lasting scars—physically, emotionally, and mentally. We thought the worst was behind us, but life had other plans.

Since that harrowing experience, Alyssa’s health has been a rollercoaster. She’s battled pneumonia, a bowel obstruction, kidney complications, ovarian cysts, and the lingering aftereffects of septic shock. Each new issue was another mountain to climb, but she faced them all with a strength and grace that inspired everyone around her.

And then came the cancer diagnosis. Adenoid cystic carcinoma. ACC. It’s rare, aggressive, and difficult to treat. When the doctor said the words, it felt like the world stopped. The tumor was in her parotid gland, and surgery was necessary. Thankfully, the surgical pathology report brought us a glimmer of hope—the best-case scenario for such a grim diagnosis. But this journey is far from over.

Now, Alyssa faces weeks of daily radiation therapy. This will be followed by a lifetime of monitoring and care because this type of cancer has a high likelihood of returning. The treatments are intense, the side effects can be harsh, and the emotional toll is heavy. But Alyssa’s resilience—and our love for our three children—keeps us going.

We’re doing everything we can to support her, but we’re learning that even the strongest families need help sometimes. That’s why we’re reaching out to our village. It’s not easy for us to ask, but we can’t do this alone.

Moving Forward with Faith

Alyssa and I have always tried to live our lives by being a light to others. We’ve volunteered, supported friends and neighbors, and done everything we could to lend a hand. Now, the roles are reversed. It’s humbling beyond words to ask for help, but we trust in the strength of our community and the grace of God to see us through this.

Our children are our reason. They remind us every day of the beauty in life and the power of unconditional love. They see their mom as a hero—and they’re not wrong. Alyssa is fighting this battle for them, for me, and for herself.

Thank you for being part of our story. Thank you for lifting us up in prayer, love, and support. We feel your kindness in every gesture, and it gives us the strength to keep moving forward.

Love, The Nilsens
